McKinnon and Harris, a Richmond VA-based furniture manufacturer, tasked us with creating a design for their NYC showroom in the Decoration & Design Building on E 59th St in Manhattan. The company prides itself on hiring local craftspeople to handcraft each piece of furniture, from the flawless aluminum joinery to the impeccable upholstering, making each piece a true work of art. From the architect: We wanted the architecture to reflect this level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, while also being understated and subtle.

The design used a restrained palette of materials, such as large slabs of warm limestone and white walls, and incorporated subtle reveals and sophisticated indirect lighting to create a museum-like setting that puts the focus on the furniture. The interior is arranged not by the ground plane, but rather by the plane of the ceiling. The long volume connecting to 59th Street is broken into a series of barrel vaults, which are a response to the existing building’s arched entry, and the adjoining volume is partitioned into an enfilade. The need for lighting that created subtle, and indirect shadows in the space was a critical criteria that drove the decision towards using Compose, our asymmetric indirect cove lighting luminaire. Due to its Microlensing™ technology, the lighting provides a truly volumetric push of light towards the open plan, thus, eliminating the need for direct lighting without compromising light levels.

The volume of the space needed to act as a vessel for its content, as a result, the illumination of the vertical plane in conjunction with vaulted coves, allowed for the architectural forms to be somewhat "lifted", therefore, providing a sense of lightness.
